District Court Judge Bruce Jones sentenced Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos to 110 years imprisonment.
The verdict came this Monday, 13 December 2021. There is video evidence of the incident.
Reportedly, he killed four people courtesy of his out-of-control semitrailer on Interstate 70, Lakewood, on 25 April 2019. He lost his brakes in Colorado’s high country and failed to take a runaway truck ramp, crashing into traffic under an overpass. The incident had four people dead and six others wounded.
24-year-old Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 67-year-old William Bailey, 61-year-old Doyle Harrison, and 69-year-old Stanley Politano died on that tragic day.
The judge had no discretion to impose a shorter sentence, as it was a mandatory minimum under state law. In October, he found Rogel guilty of four counts of vehicular homicide, six counts of first-degree assault, ten counts of attempted first-degree assault, four counts of death causing careless driving, and others.
However, Jones did say that he might revise the imprisonment in the future if the defendant seeks a review, but the judge himself doesn’t have a desire to see the criminal for the rest of his life.
Although Rojel’s attorney, James Colgan, argued that case law allowed the defendant to have a mandatory sentence of 20 years, the court imposed the one that’s over a century-long.
