Dr.Sindhutai Sapkal, an Indian social worker and activist, best known for her work with orphaned children in India, died at the age of 74 due to a heart attack. The death of such a great personality has left the entire country in mourning.
The 74-year-old died today at the Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune. She had been in the hospital for over a month. She died of a heart attack today at 8:10 p.m.
In 2021, Sindhutai Sapkal was awarded the Padma Shri in the category of Social Work.

Sindhutai Sapkal was beaten and left to die by her husband when she was twenty years old and nine months pregnant. On the night of October 14, 1973, she gave birth to a baby girl while semi-conscious in a cow shelter outside their house.
She had to rely on begging on the streets and railway platforms to make ends meet. The activist often spent the night at cemeteries because she was afraid of being picked up by men at night. People referred to her as a ghost because she could be seen at night in cemeteries.
Sapkal was born on November 14, 1948, in Maharashtra’s Wardha district, into a cattle-grazing family. Chindhi was her given name because she was an unwanted child (Marathi for “torn piece of cloth”).
After successfully completing the fourth grade, she was forced to drop out of formal education due to extreme poverty, family responsibilities, and early marriage. Sapkal married a man twenty years her senior in Wardha District when she was twelve years old.
Sindhutai fought against the exploitation of local women who gathered cow dung by the landlords and forests department in her new home. By the age of twenty, she had given birth to three sons.
Sindhutai Sapkal Health Condition
Sindhutai Sapkal was critically ill. She was treated at a private hospital in Pune. However, due to health issues, she was admitted to the hospital on December 24.
Sindhutai, meanwhile, had undergone hernia surgery. The Central Government awarded Sapkal the Padma Shri Kitab in January 2021 in recognition of her social work.

Sapkal dedicated her life to orphans. As a result, she was affectionately referred to as “Mai,” which translates to “mother.” She had cared for over 1500 orphaned children. She had 382 sons-in-law, 49 daughters-in-law, and over a thousand grandchildren.
Many of her adopted children are well-educated lawyers and doctors. Some of her adopted children, including her biological daughter, run their own orphanages.
One of her children is working on a dissertation about her life. She had received over 900 national and international awards for her dedication and hard work. She used the award money to purchase land on which to build a home for orphaned children.
